I understand that Lou Clark would put the orchestral ideas down on sheet music, which means he could read and write music. I understand that Jeff can't, much Paul McCartney ("Macca").
I know the name of chords and just write the letter down and also read tab, maybe that's what Jeff did. Maybe he is just such a genius he never forgets a tune. I may sound like a complete dunce but who is macca? Never heard that name before.
this is something that always amazes me about musicians.. i wonder, when macca or lynne were creating the songs, how they noted down their ideas? you know.. without reading /writing music, how do you write down how something sounds?.. also when your library is soooo extensive, how do you remember what a tune goes like.. bearing in mind, your not just thinking of the lead guitar... you've got the bass and the percussion too to plan..
I learned turn to stone ,hold on tight, surrender, and wishing. Of course I am a chick and don't have an orchestra so needless to say they don't sound right. Hey it's fun though and surrender sounds ok. I was inspired by shangri-la and wrote my own little tune. Maybe I'll put it on you tube someday!! Thanks for posting on this I was begining to think no one would pay attention to me.
I wondered about that. It makes me quite happy to know, beings I fancy myself a musician an can't really read music either, let alone write it. How did he teach the band the songs then? With so many songs how did he keep track of them in the early stages of writing I wonder? He is amazing!
It's not at all preposterous. Paul McCartney can't read music, he couldnt atleast when he started out and probably still can't. He doesnt need too. Like Macca and Jeff Lynne and many others, it's purely natural talent they have. As proved by Lynne and McCartney and many others, you don't have to have the ability to read music to be talented musician. I think Louis Clark has a lot to be thanked for within ELO, as together with Jeff Lynne, he was largely responsible for producing the strings for ELO.

I can play a bit of acoustic guitar and I've tried to learn some ELO tunes without much success I might add!
